Another productive week at Sonchō Karate Club has come to a close. This week was filled with hard work, dedication, and impressive growth among our members of all ranks. From our seasoned brown and black belts to enthusiastic kyu grades, we witnessed remarkable progress. As we delve into the details, the energy and effort during our sessions highlight the significant strides being made in martial arts practice.
Back Leg Drive Training
Throughout the week, our brown and black belts concentrated on the vital skill of the back leg drive. Each member trained diligently, pushing their limits and demonstrating individual improvements. This technique not only boosts power in strikes but also enhances stability during movements.
Heian Kata Judging Practice
Training this week included an engaging segment with flags for Heian Kata rounds. Everyone took turns judging and competing against one another, creating an excellent prep exercise for the upcoming HDKI GB Southern Region Karate Championships next month. This approach helped our members better understand the judging criteria and boosted their confidence under simulated competition conditions.

Kumite Exploration and Progress at Sonchō Karate Club
For our kyu grades, the focus this week was on kumite, the sparring aspect of karate. Members practiced essential blocks and counter-attacks, helping them develop their skills while stressing the importance of control and strategy. During sparring practice, all members effectively implemented their newly learned techniques, showcasing their growth and emphasizing the spirit of friendly competition. This environment not only fosters skill development but also builds camaraderie among the members.

Individual Highlights
Throughout the week, several members truly stood out. Kayley’s enthusiasm for kumite was inspiring. She radiated energy, motivating her peers to engage more deeply in their training. Isaac impressively improved his speed. Ellie, who has only been training for a little over a month, demonstrated outstanding form and control, showcasing her rapid development. Her eagerness to compete further illustrates her commitment to personal growth in martial arts.
Moreover, we emphasized dojo etiquette, with Ben exemplifying the respect and positive attitude we strive to foster at Sonchō Karate Club. His behavior served as a powerful reminder of the values we uphold in our community.
Shodan Grading Preparation
For Shodan grading preparation, our instructors focused on jiu ippon kumite and closely examined sections from Bassai Dai. This in-depth approach allows members not only to refine their techniques but also to grasp a deeper understanding of the kata. With detailed instruction, members can clearly articulate their movements, ensuring they are thoroughly prepared for the upcoming assessments.
Looking Ahead
This week has been filled with progress and discoveries at Sonchō Karate Club. We commend all members for their hard work and commitment to improvement. The dedication shown week after week proves that with perseverance and the right mindset, growth is always within reach. As we approach the championships, let’s carry this momentum forward.
Enjoy your weekend, and come back refreshed for another week of dedicated training!
